Value isn't always skin deep
In a recent article in the Toronto Star, Kunal Dsouza, a writer for Wheels.ca reviews the Kia Seltos. Seltos is a bit of an in-betweener. It’s bigger than a Kia Soul, but smaller than the Kia Sportage. Mr. Dsouza cites Toyota C-HR, Nissan Qashqai and Honda HR-V as the main competition for Seltos.
He states, “The Seltos proves once again, Kia leads the industry in offering the best value for every dollar spent.”
Value? Dollar? He’s got my attention. Let’s see if he’s right, when it comes to Automobl Value.
Mr. Dsouza was given the top-of-the-line Seltos SX Turbo to review. Let’s see how it makes out against the top-of-the-line Honda HR-V. You’ll still find 2020 Honda HR-V’s in the showroom, so we’ll pit the loaded Touring version against the SX Turbo.

As Mr. Dsouza predicted, this comparison isn’t even close. Seltos has more than $2,700 in additional Automobl Value than HR-V Touring. There’s only $195 difference in the price. When you factor in that Seltos is a 2021 and HR-V is a 2020 model, the depreciation alone would make Seltos the better buy.
However, that statement about value. Generally, the fully loaded models of most car lines aren’t the dominant sellers. Often, buyers will sneak up into the next category, sacrificing some amenities for more space and power. The volume sellers are in the mid-trim levels. Let’s see how Seltos fares against a lower HR-V trim level. That would be the LX level for both vehicles.

Even though HR-V has a higher price, it has more Automobl Value in its equipment list. HR-V has a $466 advantage at this trim level.
Let’s look at one more. Bump the trim levels up by one each, for Seltos EX and HR-V Sport.

Almost a tie. Just a slight edge to HR-V over Seltos. HR-V is priced around $2,000 more than Seltos, but adds in the equivalent Automobl Value to compensate.
If you’re actively shopping, see how Seltos compares with Toyota CH-R and Nissan Qashqai for yourself using the Automobl Comparison Tool.
As Mr. Dsouza says, Seltos delivers excellent value, but you need to know what it delivers at what price point to make an informed purchase decision. The compact sport utility segment is just about the most competitive segment in the market today, and you owe it to yourself to get as much information as you can about every model in the segment.
Know the trims
When you’re shopping for a new vehicle, it’s important to know what you’re getting at every trim level. You may find you meet all your needs with a model that has a little less equipment, and you get to pocket the difference.
