Automobl Value Awards (AVAs) – How We Decided

DSC_4687_Civic_square

The 2019 Automobl Value Awards are complete. Let’s look at each category and the specific vehicles we chose to compare. With the exception of the Full-size Sport Utility segment, we tried not to compare the base model of any vehicle. Often, manufacturers will use the base model to advertise a low price to attract attention. Once you’re in the showroom, they’ll “walk” you up to the next model or two in the lineup.  The most popular vehicles are usually the models that aren’t the cheapest, but also aren’t the most expensive.  To paraphrase Goldilocks, we looked for the model that was ‘just right’.

In detail, here’s how everyone placed.

Compact Sedan

Compact sedans offer low fuel consumption, a great line-up of safety and comfort amenities, and despite the rise of SUVs, remains a very popular segment. This category is very important to the manufacturers.  If you can sell a person a compact car, and the customer likes it, in a few years that customer is more likely to come back and buy something larger and more expensive. Honda Civic beat each competitor. But, as expected, Toyota Corolla was a close second.

Mid-size Sedan

In this category, one might expect perennial rivals like Honda Accord and Toyota Camry would dominate. The surprising winner? Ford Fusion Hybrid. Ford is getting out of the sedan business, with a commitment to develop their SUV and truck lineup, while electrifying their offerings. However, Ford is building Fusion for the 2020 model year.  The Honda Accord gave Fusion a run for its money.

This was a total battle, hotly contested by Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 with HR-V emerging as the winner.  Honourable mention to Subaru Crosstrek.  This is one of the fastest growing segments in the industry.  We chose relatively well-equipped vehicles, while trying to keep the price down.  Shoppers in this segment are very price conscious, so make sure you’re getting the features you want and need before you buy.

Another segment where the competition is fierce.  Toyota RAV4 takes the honours with the 2019 Ford Escape a very close second, with honourable mention to Mazda CX-5.  Ford is bringing an all-new Escape to market for the 2020 model year, and we’ll see if that’s enough to dethrone RAV4.

Need lots of interior room, perhaps tow a boat or an ATV or two?  A large sport utility offers space, comfort and practicality.  The surprising winner here is Volkswagen Atlas.  It eked out a win over the Chevrolet Traverse with honourable mention to Toyota Highlander.

Need to go really big?  Full-size sport utility vehicles are nicknamed ‘Land Yachts’ for their size, comfort and towing capabilities.  Another close one, but Toyota Sequoia beat its closest competitors.
