Original “California Look” Volkswagen Beetle from Southern California. A true time warp survivor! Not a re creation. Here`s the story…. A very unique and interesting 1965 Beetle which truly captures the essence of the “California Look” of the 1970`s. First off this is not a recreation or tribute of a Cal-Look Bug.This is the real deal built as it looks today back in 1977 and kept in storage since the early 80`s by the original owner. This 65 Bug started life as as your standard fare gas saving commuter car. Bought locally in Southern California it was used by it`s owner as an everyday driver. As the 60`s turned into the 70`s the VW scene here in So-Cal was changing. The ultra clean look of shaved trim and nerf bars was giving way to a more stylized interpretation of the look where flash was everywhere in the form of gleaming chrome,metallic flake paint jobs and wide wheels. Even with all the flash engine modification and performance was still the name of the game,and with so many local VW power gurus in the area it was not hard to find the right mix of parts to build that ultimate street motor that could give a challenger a run for the money. So in 1976 thats exactly what the owner of this little Bug did. He wanted an ultimate street machine that had all of that groovy 70`s funk so he could cruise the boulevard in style and maybe pick up a trophy or two at one of the Bug-Ins. He did just that until other priorities in life took over and he parked the machine in his garage where it sat for the next 25 years. I bought the car in 2008 and began the process of brining it back to life by slowly going through all the systems and seals and doing a thorough detailing of the underside (fully chromed suspension front and rear) and a light polish of the original 1970`s metallic blue paint. (Car was originally Java green and no trace of the green remains). The car has been a lot of fun and gets attention where ever it goes.However I have other projects to move on to so sadly I must pass this piece of Cal-Look history on to the next caretaker. Here is a run down of the cars details. Exterior Metallic blue paint. (Paint is still in amazing condition oweing to the fact that it spent 25 years under a cover! It still has a great shine. Blue with a slight blue pearl effect. No big chips or major blimishes only a very few tiny areas that have been touched up with a small brush but you really have to look hard. Custom “pinstripe” detailing by the legendary Lyle Fisk. (Fisk was and still is a renound pinstripe artist here in California. His work is covered in the book “Pinstripe Planet” by Herb Martinez. Fisk striped the car for a fee of $1,000.00 in 1977 dollars! (By the way included with the sale of the car is 2 pages of hand writen notes with pricing of all parts on the car. It`s interesting to see the prices of all this stuff in 77.) Custom interior. Seats,carpeting and headliner all done in a dark blue vinal with a nice tuck and roll. Fully chromed seat frames ,dash details and steering column. Original American Racing Torq Thrust wheels (Chevy bolt pattern adaptors.) 14X6 fronts and 14X8 rears. (No center caps). New tires all around. Adjustable front beam with Sway-A-Way sway bar. Rear suspension lowered 1/2 inch. Real EMPI camber compensator bar. New KYB gas shocks all around. EMPI fiberglass fenders with flares. H4 flat headlights (1967 style). 12 volt electrical system. Fully re-chromed original VW bumpers and all bumper brackets and bolts chromed. (Great chrome from when you could still do plating in California!) Original 67 style running boards. (Made by VW not aftermarket.) Cal-Look rubber around all fixed glass. (I replaced the vent wing rubber seals but the original window scrapers are still in great shape). Cool round rearview mirrors (Made in England) ENGINE 1941cc engine built by legendary Pauter Machine Company. (to build the engine they started with a “new” 1971 Super Beetle case). 73mm Rev-Tru counterweighted crank. 92mm big bore forged pistons. Lightened and balanced flywheel. Chevy rods. Machined and ground barrel spacers. Longer chrome molly push rods. HD Clevite rod bearings. 1.6 to 1 Rev-True rockers and cam. Stronger valve springs. Full chrome detail of original VW engine tins. Polished fan shroud. GENE BERG heads. (So called “square port heads developed by Gene Berg). Webber 44 IDF carbs with Redline filters and boxes. Bosch 019 distributor. (Newly rebuilt by Ed Fall) CPS made in Germany large diameter exhaust system. (This is a new item I added. The original “chrome” glass packed tube and J pipes are included. Just too laud for me! Full flow oil system with remote hi capacity cooler. All AN fittings with high pressure lines and individual breathers for each valve cover. Oil temp and Oil pressure gauges. Dash mounted VDO tach Beefed up transmission. (Car pulls great at highway speeds and turns at about 2,500RMP @ 70 MPH in 4th with lots of power avaliable without down shifting. The car has new brakes and wheel cylinders all around. I also replaced the shift rod bushing and shift coupler. New spark plugs. Rebuilt distributor. New plug wires. New fuel line. New oil seals. New shocks.New tires.New Coco mats. New vent wing,Door,hood and engine lid seals. New Hella H4 headlights. New clutch cable and clutch tube. Thats about all I can think of at the moment. It`s alot of information but I like to give potential buyers as many details as I can. Look at the pictures and re read the descriptions. The car is for auction on Ebay at this time and is offered with a reasonable reserve. Please don`t ask me to end the auction early (I will not). The car is located in Southern California and is avaliable for local inspection. I will assist as much as I can with shipping but shipping arrangements are the responsibility of the new buyer. The car is sold as is with no warranty offered. Payment is to be made within 7 days of the end of the auction and should be made with a cashiers check. Car is currently titled in California. Yes the car can be shipped to Europe but that is the buyers responsibility. Due to the large numbers of emails I will not be answering them all this time around.
