A labor of love for fellow cruisers

A labor of love for fellow cruisers
by Borgny N. Lee

It had been a long time since Mel Stanko had a fully operable 1952 Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop.  His car had a problem with the Powerglide transmission.  It would not shift into reverse.  As an honorary member of the Cannon Cruisers Car Club, he wanted to fully take part in the club's functions, but he couldn't because of severe diabetes.

So the club members donated labor and materials to get the car up and running.  Marland ("Peanuts") Husaby's expertise on cast iron Powerglide transmissions was the answer. The club would take on all the rest of the task.

The project started on September 4, when the car  was driven ten blocks, loaded on a trailer, and delivered

Chevrolet : Step Van Re-listed Street Rod. Rat Custom. Unique ...

I am selling my 1958 step van project. I purchased a stock 1958 aluminum step van 2 years ago to make it into a street rod. I have over $10k invested into this project not including my time. This is a fun and unique project because I have only seen 2 vans like this ever. I have too many projects started and one has to go. My plan was to have a customized 1958 van with an easy to work on engine and suspension so I bought a good running and driving 1987 GMC conversion van as a donor vehicle. The 87 van runs good but may need manifold gaskets. Here’s what I have done so far.: ~I completely cut the body off of the conversion van and left the floor with the frame, the dash and firewall, the engine and components and the running gear. I didnt disable anything on the conversion van that wouldnt make it run and drive. ~I unbolted the 1958 van body off of its frame and lifted it in the air and placed it onto the donor van. I did some cutouts to make everything line up and made some brackets to bolt the new aluminum body to the donor van. ~I stripped most of the paint off of the van to get it ready to sand and paint. The sections that I stripped are in primer. ~Recently I cut the nose out because I decided to hinge it for easier access to the engine compartment. (I still have all of the original parts) ~I installed a ā€œBag Itā€ brand air bag system all the way around. It has independent switches so you can raise and lower side to side or front to back . The system works ok but I would install a bigger holding tank if I keep the van. ~I have several aluminum pieces from the original dash that I was going to put back in. ~ I have new door handles, door rollers and locks. New rear tail lights and new mufflers. (not installed yet) ~I fabricated metal panels to use as a grounds effect kit. They will go down both sides and over the wheel wells. (one is on the left side as seen in the pic) ~I still have the conversion van factory rear heat and air. ~I bought used Hummer H2 mirrors. ~I have 2 front bucket seats and a rear seat from a Volvo that I was going to use in the van. All are leather and in nice shape. I also have 2 swivel seat pedestals. ~I have a power sunroof and frame out of a Volvo that I planned on installing ~I purchased a new windshield kit and new rubber which includes all 6 pcs of glass.($1100) ~Im sure that I am forgetting some things but I will add more as I remember ~I have a clean MA title. The first picture shows the van with used 285/30/22 tires and chrome spoke wheels (paid $1400) which I will let go with the deal along with the stock wheels and tires The pictures: They show the original 1958 van and they show the donor van in tact and then cut up. They also show the 58 van in the air before it was set on the 87 van There is also a rendering of what the van could look like. If you need more pictures or info please contact me because like all auctions this van is sold as-is. Anyone with less than a 10 feedback rating MUST contact me first or your bid will be canceled. US buyers only. Local pick up only unless other arrangements are made for delivery. Please remember that you are bidding on a project vehicle that needs to be finished but due to the uniqueness of the van it will be rewarding when done. Feel to stop by to check it out. A deposit of $300 is due within 12 hrs of the end of the auction and the balance is due within 3 days in cash or bank check. I can store the van for up to 2 weeks once it is paid for in full. My reserve is thousands less than I have invested but its gotta go. ~~I will deliver this van and all of the parts (after payment has been made in full) within 150 miles for free if you use my BIN. THIS IS BEING RE-LISTED~- Please note~I have had a couple of partial trade offers which I didnt consider before but now I will consider anything toward a partial trade. I dont have any interest in more projects so I will consider anything that doesnt need work.
