Nanofiber Filters Eliminate Contaminants

Methods for recycling and purifying water are a top concern for the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Space Program, as the cost of bringing water into space is exorbitant. NASA's Johnson Space Center has awarded two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts to a Florida-based nanotechnology company, Argonide Corporation, and the result has been a variety of nanotechnology products that have applications beyond space. The article details many of these products, all of which are water-related. Argonide has developed NanoCeram water filters that use nanoalumina fibers to purify water for drinking. The filters are capable of removing more than 99.99 percent of 0.025 micron particles such as bacteria, viruses, cysts, organic debris, parasites and dissolved and particulate metals. Automobile manufacturer Toyota, in an effort to reduce its water "footprint" at its United States' plants, began using the NanoCeram cartridges to purify its recycled water, reducing the amount of reverse osmosis membranes needed, and resolving a long-standing corrosion problem in its pipes. Prefilters designed by the company could also be used by desalination plants to prevent membrane defouling. According to Fred Tepper, Argonide's founder and president, "[O]ur NASA-funded research provided us with information, know-how, and techniques that enabled us to develop our current technology."
