Fury over new filters unfounded
UESTION: My wife took our VW Golf into a fast-service place to have the oil changed the other day. They convinced her to replace the air filters and charged more than $100 for them.
My wife insisted they show her the old ones and they looked "filthy." I'm incensed; I think they took advantage of her.
The car is four years old and only has 14,000 kilometres on the clock. It is rarely driven on anything other than pavement, so obviously the filters did not need replacement.

ANSWER: Calm down - they probably did need replacement if that had not been done in four years.
There are two filters, one for the engine and one for the passenger compartment.
The idea is to trap airborne contaminants, not just dust or dirt particles. While you may not drive in dusty or dirty locations, the air is not necessarily clean. Just look at the sky above the city on some days, or remember those air quality reports or warnings.
