Going green is a key focus for Mercedes-Benz and its Alabama operations, as the German automaker is turning out a local lineup of environmentally-friendly vehicles while also reducing waste and energy consumption at its Vance factory.

This week, a hybrid version of the M-Class SUV -- the first full hybrid offered by Mercedes -- was launched in the U.S. market. It joins a slate of clean diesel vehicles that also are built in Alabama.

Meanwhile, there's been a push within the plant to improve recycling efforts and cut electricity usage. Earlier this year, the plant achieved zero-landfill status, which means none of its waste ends up in a garbage dump.

"At the end of the day, we want to move the needle in protecting our environment," Ola Kaellenius , head of Mercedes' Alabama operations, said Thursday during the Transatlantic Climate Bridge conference, which was held at the Vance plant.
