Big winter storm on the way

The first significant snowstorm of the season may drop as much as 1 to 2 feet of snow in the high country and an inch or more of rain in the foothills today and Saturday, the National Weather Service reported.

A winter storm watch is in effect through tonight and into Saturday. Snow levels are expected to start out above 7,000 feet and could drop as low as 3,000 feet overnight.

“This should give us a good base-type snow,” said Jeff Hauff, a spokesman for the Dodge Ridge Winter Sports Area. “The soil is saturated and frozen, ready for what we throw on top of it. This is huge. It’s what we live for.”    

Dodge Ridge, off Highway 108 near Pinecrest, normally opens for the winter season by mid-December. Anything earlier than that is cause for celebration.
