CSO reports an increase in sales of fuel-efficient cars
There has been a surge in sales of fuel-efficient cars and diesel vehicles since the introduction of the revised motor tax system that penalises higher-polluting vehicles.
New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that sales of cars rated in the ‘A’ grade for CO2 emissions made up 15 per cent of total sales so far this year. In 2007,vehicles in that category made up just 1 per cent of newly-licensed car sales.
Sales of vehicles in the next emissions grade have also increased significantly, from around 16 per cent of sales in 2007 to 40 per cent of sales this year to date. Almost 7,000 A-grade cars were sold in the first nine months of this year, along with 22,600 cars in the B grade.

Therefore the basic technologies from the BlueMotion models are being integrated throughout the range. The result is a new offer of nine additional vehicles with the BlueMotion Technology package. The Golf and Golf Plus got a new 1.6 TDI engine with 105 hp which can have a 6-speed manual gearbox or the 7-speed DSG. The Scirocco, Eos and Tiguan are available with the 1.4 TSI engine offering a 122 hp output. The bigger vehicles like Passat, Passat Estate, Passat CC and Tiguan can be ordered with a 2.0 TDI engine that produces 140 CP.
